Restoration demand is rising, not fading
Classic Jeep restoration — Willys MB, Ford GPW, MM540 rebuilds — used to be a small, specialist request. That's changed. More owners across Tamil Nadu and Kerala are bringing in vintage Jeeps not to flip them, but to restore and actually drive them on weekend runs and expedition routes. Heritage matters more to this generation of owners than it used to.
Expedition-style builds are replacing pure show builds
A few years ago, a lot of modification requests were about looks first. That's shifted toward function-first builds: recovery gear, raised suspension, protection plates, and long-range fuel setups for owners actually planning Western Ghats routes, Kerala border ghat drives, and multi-day convoy runs rather than just weekend photos.
The accessories market is widening, not just growing
Demand isn't limited to Mahindra Thar and classic Jeeps anymore. We're seeing steady interest across:
- Suzuki Jimny — a smaller footprint that suits tighter ghat roads and forest trails
- Isuzu D-Max and Toyota Hilux — pickup platforms increasingly modified for both expedition and utility use
- Force Gurkha — a growing niche among buyers who want a more mechanical, less electronically-managed off-roader
This spread means workshops need depth across platforms, not just specialisation in one model — which is part of why fabrication-first shops with in-house capability are holding an edge over accessory-only retailers.
EV conversions: more curiosity than commitment, for now
We get asked about EV conversion kits more often than a year ago, mostly from younger owners curious about the idea. Realistically, for serious off-road use — river crossings, long ghat climbs, multi-day expeditions — diesel and petrol 4x4 platforms remain the practical choice in this region for now. It's a trend worth watching, not yet one worth building around.
What this means for owners planning a build
If there's one takeaway from where the market is heading, it's this: builds are getting more purposeful. Owners are asking "what will I actually do with this vehicle" before they ask "what will it look like." That's a healthier direction for the whole scene, and it's the kind of build we prefer working on.
